REMAINDER

"Sevil Tunaboylu brings together visual representations from her daily life, elements from her family history and albums, literary inspirations as well as more direct cues from mainstream historical moments, in order to reveal contemporary social conflicts. Whether telling personal stories of Turkey's educational system or the nation's layered migratory histories, Tunaboylu's practice is deeply embedded in the medium of painting, with a frequent use of sculptural elements. For Remainder (2024), Tunaboylu took her own family's migration history as the starting point. Thinking about the tools that enable such migrations, the artist used a methodology similar to archaeology to unearth material from her family archives. Tools for measuring and symbolic animal sculptures used for guidance were some of the elements that were discovered during these 'excavations'."
